Prioritizing Safety at Carle Health and In Our Communities: Every Day and Always

Prioritizing Safety at Carle Health and In Our Communities: Every Day and Always

On June 6, Carle Health will join healthcare organizations across the country in recognizing #HAVhope Friday, a national day of awareness organized by the American Hospital Association (AHA) as part of its Hospitals Against Violence (HAV) initiative. This day highlights the important work being done to combat violence in healthcare settings and in broader communities.

At Carle Health, safety is not something we recognize just once a year. It is a part of how we care for each other and our patients every day. We focus on creating environments that protect and support, responding to challenges with care and vigilance.

“Every team member deserves to feel safe and supported in their work,” said Keith McGlen, Vice President of Security and Emergency Management. “At Carle Health, we combine teamwork with evidence-based practices to create a safer, more compassionate environment for everyone.”

Our efforts align with the AHA’s Building a Safe Workplace and Community framework, which focuses on four key areas:

  • Mitigate Risk: We assess potential risks and implement proactive strategies to reduce them, enhancing the safety of our environment.

  • Trauma Support: We provide resources and support to help our workforce recover from incidents of violence, fostering resilience and well-being.

  • Culture of Safety: We promote a culture where safety is a shared responsibility, encouraging open communication and continuous improvement.

  • Violence Intervention: We collaborate with community partners and implement programs aimed at preventing violence and supporting affected individuals.

Across Carle Health, our Workplace Violence Committees are leading initiatives where respect, compassion and protection are at the center. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to creating safe spaces every day. While no single action can eliminate workplace violence, a combination of evidence-based interventions can help us build and sustain the safest environment possible for everyone.
